The mark of a great photographer is being able to listen to your ideas and find a way to include your vision in the photos. Make sure you are upfront with any specific poses you would like to do. That way your expectations are clear.
It’s okay if you don’t have any ideas or poses that you know you want. When talking with photographers ask them for ideas. Evaluate if you like what they have to say.
If you are nervous about making the commitment ask about doing an engagement session first. It will give you a chance to get to know the photographer better. You will also be more comfortable on your wedding day because you now have an established relationship.
An experienced wedding photographer is accustomed to working in many different environments. They will be willing to meet you there beforehand or arrive early on the day of your wedding to look over the location.
Contracts protect everyone. This is your guarantee that the photographer you choose will deliver what they promise. I would worry, if someone said not to worry about a contract.
Accidents happen. True professionals are prepared. Plus, some venues won’t allow vendors to work there if they don’t have it. Ask about Liability Insurance.
To get a clear vision of what your wedding pictures might be, ask to see all the pictures from one or two of the photographer’s recent weddings. Are you connecting with the images you see? If so, then you may have found the right photographer for you.
Not all personalities match. On a day as important as your wedding, when so much time and money has been invested, you need to make sure that you like and trust the person behind the camera. Your photographer will be with you for a majority of the day and if that person annoys you or makes you uncomfortable, it will show in the pictures.
I know there are lots of factors that go into your final decision, but this should be the most important one.
